    Losing TOO fast?

I am on day 9 of the VLCD and I am down 20 lbs. I know most people would be super excited about that, but I am beginning to get concerned that I am stepping into unhealthy territory. i know I have some things in my favor for weight loss... I am young, male, and have over 100 lbs to lose. Any thoughts? My main concern is that I am destroying muscle in the process.

BTW... I am following the plan to a T. 500 calories, 6 liters of water a day, no working out, etc.

if you have that much to lose i'm guessing you used to eat a lot of carbs- and therefore have a lot of water weight that you've lost this first week. that said, muscle loss is a definite risk. is there a reason you're not exercising? if you have the energy, do it- there is nothing in the protocol that prohibits this; if anything, dr. s. encourages it. you also might want to think about eating an extra serving of protein.

How much over 100 lbs do you have to lose? The bigger you are the faster you will lose especially if you had a high carb, high sodium diet prior to going on this diet. Men lose faster than women and the more you have to lose, the faster it will go. Just make sure that you are getting your electrolytes. Good job!

it's a common rumor that gets throw around. but there is nothing to discourage exercise in the protocol- he actually encourages it. you just have to watch that you don't do too much, because you're not eating much. so you might need to decrease your weights, or intensity- but continuing some activity is good, especially something like walking, bike rides, swimming, yoga, light weights- it helps you maintain muscle tone.

Exactly what mgsondance said! Also, the reason for exercising on this diet is to keep the muscle body active and to assist it in adjusting to the new environment. When your fat stores decrease around a muscle, the environmental tension that the muscle has relied upon changes and the muscle has to work harder to get back to "normal". Basically, the muscle needs to shorten a bit and that takes work. Until this adjustment happens, the muscle has to work harder and makes you more prone to muscle fatigue. But if you are doing light exercise on a regular basis, the muscle adapts more quickly and you are far less likely to experience the fatigue. So, you see, there is an argument FOR exercise in the Dr S protocol. Just moderate it and pay attention to your energy levels. This isn't the time to train for a marathon, either.

Exercise is great but I notice that if I try to do too much, like high intensity cardio or anything more than walking or yoga, it really does stimulate the appetite.
