Phase 2: My Journey R1 - daily struggles, successes

My wife and I are doing the HCG diet together. Today we needed encouragement and found it here. Thanks for this wonderful resource. I thought a diary of our journey might help others.

This is DAY 12 for us. I am down 14.5 lbs, my wife, 13.5. We are *thrilled* to say the least.

A little bio on the start date:
    ME
    age 60, 5-9, 282 lbs
    target weight=220
I am mildly diabetic - taking 800mg x 3 Metformin. "Normal" morning sugar with medication has been about 145.

    My wife
    age 56, 5'4"
    target weight loss 100 lbs

    Highlights Thus Far

I came out of the gate running, losing 9.5 pounds the first week! My wife was about 2 pounds behind me, but passed me by day 10. Since then we have run neck-and-neck, with her being ahead until yesterday.

To date, we have been perfect, but the last 2 days as well as today have been a struggle. So much so that I began searching on this forum for things relating to "cheating." Nearest as I can tell, the opinion is that one can cheat and continue to lose weight but that in doing so may lose the benefits of the "stabilization" phase.

What we are searching for is, of course, lasting change. If this diet will truly "reset us to childhood settings" I just cannot risk that by cheating. If we cheat, we will never know if it might work EXACTLY AS ADVERTISED. Therefore, we opted to reinforce our resolve instead of cheating.

I can see that doing this diet with a spouse is really a huge advantage. We are highly supportive of each other.

A suggestion to others: If you do not have a spouse on the diet with you, find a friend to diet with; someone you can share with. This is a tough diet for anyone, especially so for someone who is truly obese.

As I mentioned earlier, today was the 3rd straight day that we struggled. This morning my wife said, "I just want to go out to lunch!" In context, she meant, she was at a weak point and just wanted to go for something she was craving. This was my time to support her as she did me yesterday.

We decided that we had to do something or we were going to blow it, if not today, then tomorrow, or the next day.

We read posts on this forum that helped solidify what we knew already and taught us some things we had missed, especially the part about blowing up the stabilization phase by cheating. If we are "struggling" to stick with it, as well as we are doing, imagine where we would be if we were in a plateau!

Our solution was to buy a diet book - HCG Diet Gourmet Cookbook - and get excited about new recipes. WE HAVE TO MAKE THIS WORK! We spent an hour looking at all the recipes, making plans for dinner tonight.

We used to EAT OUT at least 2 nights and 2-3 lunches each week. On the diet, money is just about no object with us because of all the money we are saving from those restaurant trips. As far as I am concerned, this is a healthy way to look at it. After all, how much would we PAY to be slim again?

    Results Recap
In addition to the 14.5 lbs for me and 13.5 lbs for my wife, my average blood sugar has dropped 20 points. In addition, I have already cut my medication by 1/3 to twice a day! Yesterday's blood sugar reading was 121, the lowest I have had in 3 years! Today's was 110 - that is like lowest in 10+ years!

Beth reported that she had a great night's sleep last night due in no small part from the fact that I did not snore! Although I have not had sleep apnea in a long time, I do get a pretty healthy snore going at times.

So, we are back on track - fully excited again. We are also armed with new ammunition in this war: a new cookbook, this forum, and a healthy belief that we really can succeed at this.

My plan is to post often in the coming months, daily when possible. I encourage replies.

    Until tomorrow,
    Dave & Beth

Great story so far, and inspiring!

I've been lucky, I think - I'm on day 8 of the VLCD and haven't really felt an urge to cheat yet. I think in part it's because - from the start - I am experimenting with different ways to cook food. And some of the foods on the list are foods I never really ate (like asparagus) so the new flavors are keeping me on track. One of the BEST things I did was buy a steamer! The food turns out wonderful, and it is so convenient. Today I put half an onion, some asparagus and a cod fillet all together in my steamer and steamed it all for 15 minutes (taking the asparagus out after 5 or so) - it was fabulous. Onions are SO sweet when they are steamed...it's like candy. The steamer cost $20 and I can already guarantee that I will continue using it even after I'm off the diet.

Amazingly, I haven't felt any real hunger either. I'm Cajun by heritage, and my whole life has been a celebration of food and flavors, so I felt a bit of emotional hunger for those flavors. But man, I feel SO good, even after just a week, that I think I can make this kind of change in eating habits permanent. I just move better, don't feel bloated and heavy. I may have only lost 8 pounds so far, but feel like I've lost 20.

I just joined the boards today too, and found a lot of useful information as well as supportive attitudes. I look forward to reading about you and Beth's journey, and sharing my own!

    Day 14 - 15 pounds gone forever!

Down 1/2 pound from yesterday, to minus 15. Beth is at minus 14.5! Thought I would begin with a day-by-day display of my results. The number in parentheses is my morning sugar.

    Day 1 0 (148)
    Day 2 0 (151)
    Day 3 0 (141)
    Day 4 -3.5 (137)
    Day 5 -6.0 (130)
    Day 6 -8.0 (137)
    Day 7 -9.0 (123)

Day 8 -9.5 (145) had my 2nd fruit just before bed
    Day 9 -11.0 (121)
    Day 10 -11.0 (125)
    Day 11 -12.0 (132)
    Day 12 -14.0 (128)
    Day 13 -14.5 (110)
    Day 14 -15.0 (120)

We learned a lot yesterday from this forum as well as the diet book we read. One thing that confuses us a little is that the list of acceptable foods seems to change from one recipe book to another. For example, the recipe book we purchased yesterday (HCG Diet Gourmet Recipe Book) said that low-fat cottage cheese was acceptable. It also spoke of "beef broth." These two items would be huge additions, what I call "sanity additions."

I added the beef broth - using a store variety that was low in sodium. LOL - First thing I did was add salt because it was so bland.

I am, by nature, a BIG eater. Actually, pretty healthy (i.e. vegetables, etc.) but lots of food. I realized early on that measuring calories PRECISELY was just not going to work for me.

What I have done is to allow myself to eat as much celery, radishes, lettuce and spinach as I want (no dressings, of course). Not sure how many calories this actually adds but the process continues to work. Beth has not done this and our weight loss has been very similar.

One thing this has done for me is to address a root problem of my personal eating disorder: eating for gratification. So, when I am looking longingly towards the kitchen, the first thing I ask myself is, "Am I hungry or am I looking for gratification?" If I am hungry, then the need can be filled with food. In theory, ANY FOOD. So, next I ask myself, "How about some celery?" If the mental response is, "That won't do," then I am probably looking for gratification rather than just filling my stomach.

The other day we made a chicken tortilla soup recipe (minus the tortillas, of course). It was so good, but carried extra calories because the recipe called for 1.5 pounds of chicken. (Remember that our recipes are for TWO people but that is about seven portions the way we keep score.)

Actually, the chicken wasn't THAT good. I found it to be dry. After all, it IS boiled chicken. Anyway, we made the same soup again, and removed the chicken after cooking. Sure, there are SOME calories left in the soup from the chicken that clucked its way through during the slow-cooking process, but most are probably still in the chicken. The point is that the soup minus-the-chicken is a wonderful filler-up snack.

Beth can eat chicken every day - she calls it "chicken slop." Personally, my taste runs towards fish, shrimp and crab. Note that with these portion sizes, coupled with all the money one saves from what they DON'T BUY at the grocery store, you can afford an occasional lobster tail or fillet mignon. (Beth does not like seafood but loves filet mignon.)

Yesterday, at WINCO, a 5-oz lobster tail was $5.99. I actually bought a pound of frozen snow crab. Depending upon where you look, that is about 180 calories, give or take. Just about the right size for a 200 calorie portion. Tonight is CRAB NIGHT for me!

Indulgence helps me stay solid on this diet.

    Later, fellow weight-winners.

    Day 15: - 15.5 Sugar 119

Beth and I are even again. I find it just amazing that after 15 days we've lost a whopping 31 pounds between us. Yet as I look at the scoresheet I realize that I am now dropping *just* .5 pounds per day. LOL - Before I started this I would have been pleased with 1.5 pounds per week. I literally pray every morning before I get on the scale.

Funny thing... We have one of those scales with the sliding weights (like at the doctor's office). It seems so unnatural that the slider is in such a different place on the bar. It hasn't been in this far to the left in 10 years! Beth's is getting ready to wrap around. I think she needs to lose 1 pounds to move the BIG weight left! Go Beth!

Today Beth made a "vegetable soup," beginning with some low-sodium beef broth, stewed tomatoes, lots of onions. We added celery and cabbage at the end. This was my "snack meal" if I felt hungry or deprived.

For my afternoon snack I sectioned an apple, smothered it in cinnamon and Truvia, added a little water and cooked it in the microwave for 3.5 minutes. Actually quite good. (I normally would not use cinnamon on a bet but these are special times. LOL)

Dinner was hamburgers with grilled onions cooked in the grease from the burger. Some beautiful sliced tomatoes made the meal complete. And left me hungry an hour later. The soup was fantastic.

Beth works so hard at this for us. There is so much more work for her. I help but compared to what she does... well, let's just say that I've got the best of this deal.

We've determined that we aren't drinking enough water so today we counted the glasses. We both had 4 x 32 oz.

Had a doctor visit today (as well as a filling at the dentist). The doctor was thrilled with my progress - especially the drop in my sugar. Noticed that this has been a good year for weight loss thus far - 28 pounds. I was surprised he was so supportive of the HCG diet. He knew the diet pretty well but asked me to fill him in on the fine points. Great doctor, this guy.

I hope you're reading this and getting something out of it. We can do this. You can do this. There will be less of us each day!

    Best to everyone.

Hi Dave & Beth, and greetings from Canada!
I am on VLCD12 and have dropped 16 lbs so far. Isn't this just the greatest?! Loved reading your posts, and you're doing just fine! As for the variances in the cookbooks, I think this protocol has been 'tweaked' over the years, since it's been around since the 1950's, but if you haven't yet, it's always good to read the original protocol by Dr. Simeons called Pounds and Inches, who developed this diet...you just have to google it. I agree that some of us actually save money, myself included, so what I've been doing is being extra good to myself, and eating the best food...organic when I can find it, fresh fish, and grass fed beef. I purchased a beef tenderloin for $100+, which I would never normally had done, and sliced it into 18 100gr filet mignons...they are SO delicious! I think it's also helpful to have a 'reward' at the end to aim for... in my case, I spend part of the winter in warmer climes, leaving mid Dec., so knowing I'll have to wear a swimsuit in a couple of months keeps me motivated.

I've been on a journey to better health for the last 3 months after losing two very close friends in the last couple of years, and have been following a natural health website called mercola.com. It's an amazing resource (by the way, there are many many comments on there from type 2 diabetics who changed their diets/lifestyles, and are no longer on ANY medications)....anyway, it was there that I first heard someone discussing this hcg diet, and that's what brought me here. I am 55 years old, and already feeling much better than I used to! It's up to us to take responsibility for our own health. By the way, kudos to your doctor for encouraging you...most allopathic doctors out there have a hard time thinking 'outside the box' to prevention, and would much rather write prescriptions for our 'ills'. Which kind of hcg are you using? I am using the hhcg pellets...and I know they are working, otherwise this wouldn't be doable on so few calories. Good luck to you and Beth, and I look forward to following your journey!

    Day 16: Lost another pound!

    Day 16: -16.5 lbs, sugar 125.

    Reet,

Thanks for the great post. Glad to see it is working so well for you.

When it comes to making changes we are fearful of breaking what is working, so we keep doing what we started with. I emphasize that because I am not saying it is right - perhaps not the "perfect" version of the protocol - but what we understood with the documentation we received.

When you speak of "losing people," this is the time of life we have entered. I am trying to avoid being "one of them," at least as much as it is avoidable at this late date. Seems to be working.

    Keep up your encouragement!

Beth is down 16 pounds, just .5 pounds behind me. She struggles with hunger but toughs it out. The problem is that she cannot get herself to eat that 2nd fruit. She really should, and I am nagging her a little (but lovingly ). She is stubborn and will simply do what she has to do.

Today was not a difficult day for us. I still have a little "food in the bank," my 2nd fruit, and did not eat all my dinner. (I have some pan-friend spinach left - fried into a patty and heavily seasoned. Pretty bad, actually. But I will probably eat it. Also a little asparagus.)

Every time I feel the need for gratification, I tell myself that saying, "no" builds character. I admit that I never thought I could actually do this. It has been a confidence builder, frankly. Feeling in control makes me feel like I could accomplish anything.

So, 16 down and a bunch more to go.

Day 17: Down 17 lbs Lowest Blood Sugar ever!

So, today is Day 17. Another day, another 1/2 pound. That was a little bit interesting because it came without the benefit of a, dare I say it? Why not? You ladies speak of your TOM, will... It was without a BM!

    There, I said it.

All over this forum I see posts about needing laxatives. Why is that? I mean, we're eating almost all vegetables and we're constipated? I just don't get it. But, alas, it is true.

Usually I am as regular as a clock. First thing, as soon as I wake up, and again just after dinner. But those were the old days. These are the new days and I am far less oriented towards any familiar schedule. There is still one almost every morning, but now "morning" could mean 11am.

On to other things - My blood sugar was only 107 this morning! 107! Why, that is downright normal! Of course, I am still taking two doses per day of my Metformin but two more days of this and I will drop half of that!

If you're readin' this then you must be doin' this. The diet, that is. Stay with it.

Day 18: No loss today, but 6th straight day non-diabetic!

Day 18 - Woke up to no weight loss this morning, but this was my 6th consecutive day of below diabetic levels! I had been planning to reduce my diabetes medication to 1 pill per day next week but since I forgot to take my 2nd pill yesterday, I decided, now is as good a time as any. So, I'll be anxious to see my sugar in the morning.

This diet has shown Beth & I just how much our world revolves around food. It is only about 99% of our social life!

We both work at home in our online business. We are one of those rare couples who really work well together. I work a very intensive 4.5 day week (M-F) then we have weekends to ourselves. On those weekends, guess what we do? Or, more accurately, used to do? EAT!

Most Fridays have been early lunch out and an afternoon movie. Shopping for the weekend, movie rentals, etc. in the afternoon, then dinner out with friends. Saturday and Sunday, both lunch and dinner out. We live in Reno, the inexpensive food capital of the U.S. Seriously, restaurant costs here are crazy-low compared to EVERYWHERE else.

Of course, what we are famous for here is the great buffets. Forget Las Vegas, where the prices have risen dramatically. Here in Reno, a typical seafood buffet is around $22. Heck, we actually have a buffet here where you can get all-you-can-eat Maine lobster for $26!

Another thing about Reno restaurants are the 2/1 coupons and deals. Both of us can eat lunch at the Peppermill for $16! Our there is Legends Sports Bar where $6 will get you a 1/3 lb burger-fries meal with any drink (including alcohol) on Thursdays.

My point is, that restaurants and especially buffets, WERE a mainstay in our weekly routine. Certainly at the root of the weight problem as well.

This diet has broken us of the eating out habit. I am truly amazed that with the shear quantity of eating I have always done I have handled this diet so (relatively) effortlessly. Do I still THINK of food? Sure. But I do not sit around DREAMING of it. I am assuming that this is part of the impact of the HCG. When I have done diets in the past - like Weight Watchers (which is a very good program, BTW) - there were times when I simply craved a particular meal. Like ribs, or crab, or a thick steak, or... the list would go on and on. I think that ACCEPTING that there are simply things which are off the menu FOR NOW makes it a lot easier.

We have an acquaintance who had a baby about a year ago. She had been a smoker and quit as soon as she found out she was pregnant. (Good for her!) Now, 2 years later, she is back to smoking. I find it appalling that after working so hard to break the smoking habit, she could allow herself to go back!

Part of our re-feeding process will be to institute a system for controlling those crazy almost-binge-eating buffet trips. In other words, unlike our friend with her cigarettes, we WILL NOT allow ourselves to be sucked back into the vortex of calories. We just cannot allow it. We are working too hard at this. (Okay, so it isn't THAT effortless, after all.)

For me, it will be WW's point system, with a serious lifetime restriction on carbs. My days of carbs-carbs-carbs are done forever. I think the WW system will allow me a nice, solid 1,400 calories per day (28 points), while always keeping one eye on the scale. If that turns out to be too many points, then I will reduce them to a level where I can maintain my weight.

    Viva Buffets!

    Stay encouraged.

Day 19: Lost 1 lb. Down 18 total. Sugar=119, (now on 1/3 meds)

So, after losing nothing yesterday, I dropped a full pound this morning. Beth did, too and is still a half-pound behind me. She is amazing - just takes it all in stride so easy.

We have not measured since we took our starting measurements but both can see that we've lost. And the great thing is that we're losing it just where we need to! It is very encouraging.

If anyone reading this is (or was ) obese you know what "an apron" is. Well, mine is almost completely gone! This, in less than 3 weeks! I wake up every day excited to see what I have lost overnight.

Today we did a little planning. Our original plan was to commit for 40 days. Now we are not so sure. I want that "34 pounds" that I understand is the maximum we should lose in a round. I started at 282, just 12 pounds below what my absolute high was. If I drop 34 pounds per round and can do two rounds, I will be 214!

Let me tell you a little bit about me. I was an athlete. Always an athlete. As a kid, my typical breakfast was a 4 eggs, a quart of orange juice, and a pound of bacon.

In the military I jumped out of air planes, climbed mountains and broke boards. At age 21 I left the Army and continued exercising. 25-30 hours per week, studying my martial arts. Even then I had an undiagnosed eating problem but I was 195 lbs of solid muscle. All that violent exercise can hide a myriad of eating disorders. I ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted.

Then, in my early 30s I got married. My then-wife came with a 9yr old son who was intimidated by me. At the time I was still working out 20 hrs per week and made the worst decision of my life: I decided that the best thing for me to do was to give up martial arts for 6 months. Without all that exercise, I just ballooned! I gained 40 pounds in the first 3-4 months and 70 pounds that year. Martial arts became a thing of the past for me.

Over the next 25 years I gained a few more pounds (as most of us do). I dieted, exercised, lost weight, gained it back. I went vegan for 18 months. Got all the way down to the 220s and let it all slip away when I went back to eating animal protein.

Now, at age 60, I am finally seeing how I can turn back the clock. Not just my body... but my mind as well. This has been a year of "self-renaissance" for me. I have taken charge of my time, my finances, my energy. The only piece missing has been my health.

This has just been a phenomenal year.

Be encouraged! We can do this!

    Dave & Beth
