For those of you who take digestive enzymes, do they actually work and if so, once you begin to take them does your organism get used to them and then you are stuck taking them for life? I've been reading on here about enzymes for proteins, carbohydrates, fat, dairy, potassium to regulate water retention, hydrochloric acid for ???....... I'm overwhelmed and had no idea that these things even existed. Will they really help to "balance" your food consumption and weight better?

Also, how often are these enzymes taken? I read that Multi Enzyme Formula is only one pill and taken once a day but then read that some others are taken at each meal??? I'm lucky that I'm 37 and have no chronic health issues for which I need to take daily medications (yet) since I'm very forgetful about taking something every day (like antibiotics or pain meds).

Lastly, can all of these enzymes be taken in addition to a multi-vitamin? I don't take that either but am seriously considering to start but now am wondering if I should start with enzymes too.

    Thanks!

They don't balance anything, hon. As we age, our body quits producing enough hydrochloric acid so we need to replace that. It's often what's wrong when you have acid reflux or other stomach problems. The enzymes are for digestion also because cooking kills the enzymes in our food.

Got it, thanks. So they will help with digestion which in turn will alleviate bloating, water retention and other factors which can cause weight gain (even temporarily)?

I'm just trying to assess how "needed and important" these enzymes are as I really hate to take daily pills but will consider those (in addition to a multivitamin) because I'm approaching 40 in a few years and it may be time to start.

You take them with every meal, not once a day or anything. They CAN help with those things if you have a dairy intolerance for example.

Also penny, as you are coming out of such a clean diet, your stomach might resent the extra fats and get bloated. I know that when i dieted before and suddenly had a very greasy food, i felt nauseaus and sick. i started taking the enzymes on D2 of P3, and never had a problem

Thank you Grammy and SunLover. I plan on buying some enzymes this week before I begin P3 next week.

One more question, do you take them before meals or after meals and can you take them only with meals that you know "may cause problems", for instance that contain high sodium or meals that contain dairy?

I guess I'm still struggling as to whether I "need" them.

Also, what is hydrochloric acid used for?

    Thanks!

I take them with every meal. I pop one just before I start eating. but I'm 58 and know from tests that I need them.

penny, i also took them with each meal, but not with snacks. sometimes i forgot to have them before eating, but i still had it either during or after the meal. Don't know if they were still as effective, but i was never once bloated or gassy during P3

Yes. Also i' back on p2 and plan on taking them whenever i eat steak. Hopefully will make the digestion easier. I think seafood makes me stall (only had it once in r1 but gained) so i eat beef a lot. I'm hoping that taking the enzymes this r2 will help with BM.
