OK, so living in S. Florida we have a strong Latin influence for food. Today my mother brought over some fried sweet plantains. For those of you who don't know, the ingredients are ripe plantains (bananas), sliced and fried in oil. No sugar is added, nor is any salt. I have not had any bananas yet in P3, and today is technically the first day of my third week, so I thought "why not". Except that someone now told me that sweet plantains are very starchy. Ayyyyyyy..... I guess I don't know too much about my own culture. Does anyone know if this is allowed in P3? If not, I just ate something I wasn't supposed to so I'm sure the scale will be up even more tomorrow. :(
I see a lot of questions about fruit and anyone can figure out the starch and sugar content by going to a nutritional site such as calorieking.com or fitday.com and plugging in the food you are considering. Look at the total carbohydrate count. Carbohydrates measure three things: sugar, fiber and starch. All fruit has some sugar and many have a little starch, but you want to avoid the fruits that are highest in both. Plaintains are VERY high in both sugar and starch, they are similar to a potato, actually worse. Here are the stats for one cup:
Plaintains Total Carbs. 48g Dietary Fiber 3.5g Sugars 21.6g
You can substract out the fiber from the carb count because it has no calories and passes through the body undigested.
So of the 44.5 grams of carbs left, 21.6 are from sugar, and 22.9 are from starch.
OMG...I ate them every day in Puerto Rico. Would love some with breakfast. I do think they are quite starchy, and probably a wait for P4 food based on what I'm reading. I would kill from some Mofongo now though.
