I know the title says Anonymous but has anyone ever been to one of their meetings? I may try it out since I'm a binge eater

I have gone and it's just like AA.

    I couldn't cut it there,
You all take turns speaking and aren't allowed to comment or have conversation.
I think it might depend on what meeting your going to, I tried a lot of them,
I would read about the program first and see if it fits your style.

I wondered about this group too as I feel a loss of control over my cravings and eating most of the time.

Although I think Kevin Trudeau over the top in general, his book did open my eyes to the fact that we have been duped into getting addicted to highly processed foods by the food industry. I can almost see how the FDA is allowing it all to happen too. Comes down to profits. Realizing that there was an addictive component to fast food, diet soda, cookies, candy, etc. helped me understand what is really causing my binge eating. Omitting high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, and sugar from my diet was the only way to alleviate the real issue.

Until that sunk in no amount of will power or group process was going to help me stop the cycle.

    Just my observation,
    Mary

Thanks Gals! I'm really having a hard time with binge eating. I have eaten healthy (lean meats, veggies, lower carb) 85% of the time for most of my life...I am a type 1 diabetic and take being in control very seriously but when I crash, I crash super hard!

I had the same issue before this diet. I would just eat and eat and eat... I looked into OA but it seems like all those things are super religious- they replace addictions with God- its just not for me

They all use the 12 steps... if you google "12 steps" you can read them... they are almost all about God. I can see how it has worked for so many, but its just not my thing

I'm a proud Al-Anon'er and yes..there is a strong central theme of Higher Power.

That said, one of my Favorite phrases at every meeting is "Take what you like and leave the rest." If you can go with an open mind and understand that while noone should push faith or religion, everyone that goes has issues and noone is perfect. You'll likely hear some great things, gain understanding of how you aren't alone in whatever addiction or behavior pattern has developed and that others have found ways to change, to overcome, to alter their thoughts and actions to better themselves. And receive postive support from others regardless of your situation.

Recovery (whether it's alcohol, drugs, food or behaviors) is a journey, not a destination.

I agree wholeheartedly with you Susan! I saw this post earlier when I was in P2, and I thought...if they only knew! It reminded me of the Herbert Spenser quote in the big book, about "contempt prior to investigation" is the one downfall of mankind.

but it's odd, that anyone nowadays would even think it is super religious, because in this day and age, with addictions and recovery so much in the mainstream, everyone pretty much knows basically what it's about! what about all the celebrities in 12 step programs? and Tv shows abound about it basically. it isn't religious, it's spiritual in nature, but there is freedom, like you said, in taking what you like and leaving the rest.

I am a proud member of Overeaters Anonymous (OA) and will say that it is wonderful - especially doing it in conjunction with the hCG program. Don't be turned off by the "God" talk. The emphasis is more on taking a spiritual approach to food addiction than anything else. When you are going to the meetings, you choose the Higher Power that is right for you. There are a lot of people who attend who are atheists and agnostics, and they often have the group or OA itself as their higher power. The founders had God as their higher power, and that's why it's stayed in the literature and language. Here's an example in Steps 2 and 3 (I'm listing Step 1 just to keep it all in sequence):

Step 1: We admitted that we were powerless over food and that our lives had become unmanageable.

Step 2: Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Step 3: Made a decision to turn our will and lives over to the power of God AS WE UNDERSTOOD HIM.

Just wanted to encourage you if you think that's the route you will take. It is amazing and the people are super accepting of everyone. It has truly brought forth amazing results in my life!!
