I start P4 on the 4th of July. And I know I have to go slow with everything, but my husband is a HUGE casserole lover as was I. And now that I can't combine starch with proteins, well that eliminates them in all. And I can't have sandwiches, meat with potatoes. I do make the cauliflower version of mash potatoes and love them, but now I am thinking I should just stay on P3 the rest of my life. I don't eat bread plain, only with meat, noodles are always in a casserole with meat, no cheese sandwiches. Okay granted I could do P3 but add sugar to my diet, have to have my chocolate, but even then I could do mug cake or choc crack. So what the blankety blank do I eat? I love strawberry shredded wheat for breakfast or special K, the new granola one, are these okay. So far the only think I have eaten for breakfast in P3 is eggs, and that will just make my cholesterol sky rocket from the yolk. Please help me. Are gluten free breads and desserts starch free, like on Elana's Pantry?
the problem is not protein plus starch, it's fat plus starch, or fat plus sugar. and not that you can't ever have those combinations, but they are the ones to watch out for. if i have a sandwich in P4 (whole grain bread), i try to keep the meat lean, and not use a lot of mayo or butter on it. if you're going to have whole-grain pasta, have it with a red sauce that is lower in fat than something like an alfredo sauce.
if you have meat and potatoes, make the meat lean and don't use much butter on the potato. if you want to have a well-marbled (fatty) steak, then have veggies and a salad instead of potatoes. it's a balancing act. if you do have a meal that has a lot of fat/starch/sugar together, then back off the next day and try to stick to lean meats and veggies.
casseroles are definitely a problem- but they will be eventually for him as well, so no time like the present to make a shift to healthier alternatives. :) If you make one, keep the fat content low.
in terms of the cereals, check the sugar level- most things like that have a lot of added sugar. better to get regular shredded wheat and add your own berries to it.
P4 is a balancing act - this or that, sometimes a little of both. The goal is to be able to eat what you want - in moderation without it showing on the scale. I'll be going to a party tomorrow night...so during the day tomorrow I'll be sticking to proteins and a few veggies. Then at the party, I might have a bite or two of some appetizers.
So if I were to make desserts from her website and make my own bread with almond flour, I would do better. Otherwise stay with whole grain. When I buy meat I am pretty anal about it not having any fat on it, when I cook chicken breasts I usually demolish it buy picking out those bloody veins I see. My hamburger is always 96-98% fat free anyway. Oh but blimpie sandwiches, mmmm. And I guess Mexican food is pretty much out unless I only eat the innards of the tacos or enchiladas. That is a big prob for me. I read somewhere that when I eat fruit I should not eat it with meals just in between so that I don't mix the sugar with the other food, is that right?
I was good with Ezekiel breads, buns etc. I would just say if you are going to splurge on something make sure you eat more P3 items that day. I would have like a treat meaning a sugar or starch a day.
Okay question if you know. If I were to make my own bread with almond flour, do I use the same amount as I would normal flour and use all the same ing with it? Ezekiel bread, is that just in Walmart or health food stores? I am sorry I am so dumb and nervous. Thank you for your help though.
Your not stupid this is all new to most of us. I found it at Whole Foods it is actually in the freezer section. You can ask them when you get there. I know Trader Joe's has it not in the frozen section.
