I am so perplexed: there's this whole undercurrent of "us" (or "we") who have discovered, or re-discovered this diet. Where has it been? My buddy Kelly tells me it's been around since the 70's - it's so wonderful and works so well, why did it go underground only to resurface now, and WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD ABOUT IT? And WHY ARE OPRAH AND THE OTHER TALKY TALKIES NOT TALKING ABOUT IT? And why are there not shelves of HCG friendly items, such as stevia crystal light, etc.? I feel like I'm in an alternate universe and sorry to sound so uneducated about the history of this thing. SSSSH! I won't tell anyone if I'm not supposed to! But any "education" would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hcg diet has actually been around since the 50's!!!! On the left nav bar, scroll down and read Dr. Simeons Pounds and Inches...

I'm not sure why the talkies aren't talking about it...I know that it was more popular in 08 then now - but I didn't learn of it until this past January. As for Hcg friendly products on shelves, well it seems that not everyone does okay with the same stuff. Example, some can use stevia during P2 others can't. Of course, then you have all of the nay-sayers that would cause an uproar about using the pee from prego women...

If you read Kevin Trudeau's book, he talks about the fact that this is a permanent solution to weight problems and the diet industry makes $3 billion dollars a year on diet products...if this diet was marketed and well know, it would be devastating to the diet industry...the country is run by big business and big business keeps things like this hush hush. Just my two cents
    :)

I'd even venture to suggest that we think about who else, in the USA, could make money from the epidemic of obesity.

HMOs, anyone? Being sick costs a HELL of a lot more than being healthy, and how many diseases are linked to/caused by obesity? These are some of the most powerful lobbyists in the country.

The diet industry, as previously mentioned.

Oh yes, and where would we be without all those corn subsidies? High Fructose Corn Syrup, I'm looking at you.

Is it a conspiracy? Maybe. Maybe not. Or maybe the "path of least resistance is simply to keep the clockwork gears ticking away, keep the mechanisms in place, and not cough up the money to do the type of exhaustive, controlled scientific research that it would take to get this diet into "mainstream".

And there might be another factor, as well. Let's face it, you don't do this diet if you lack willpower and discipline. You CAN'T. It won't work for you. How many average Americans can you think of that truly have the heels-down, grit-your-teeth, do-what-it-takes determination to do something like THIS? I've been a lotta places and met lots of people, both in the workforce and in academia. I can't think of too many.

Our culture is built around food. Quick, cheap, dirty food. We make a social event out of it. People get insulted if you go to their house and refuse to eat their cooking. Father's-in-law tell you it's "lame" to refuse a (cheap, nasty) beer at a baseball game because you're on a diet.

Why is HCG not more popular? I think because you have to know what you want and be willing to do what it takes to get it. Those are two qualities that we do not train into our youth... sadly enough. (And as a high school teacher... I gotta tell ya... we should.)

newmom - yes! totally agree! life changing movie.

I also think it's crazy that it's not more well known. It took till a client told me about it after she lost 70 lbs. and then I was so excited and emailed my mom all about it and she's like "oh yeah, your sister did that last year, it works!" um, hello, why did no one tell me??? my sister didn't even NEED to lose weight, she was like a size 8.

I don't think its a conspiracy by drug companies or big business--if this became more popular, they'd find a way to make money off it too. There's already been a rash of clinics making big bucks offering their versions of the Protocol, and many unscrupulous internet sites claiming to sell hhcg too.

I think the real reason is the 500-calorie diet is seen as highly dangerous by people who don't understand it (just like Atkins did many years ago talking about eating fat and losing weight) along with the attention hcg gets as a pregnancy hormone. Many men would NEVER take it for that reason alone, regardless of the results. The media doesn't really get into the details of the science behind it, it's not an easy sound bite to describe it. I remember first hearing about the diet on a talk show maybe 10-20 years ago and thought it was totally crazy. It took me some desperation with dieting since then to do more research about alternative approaches to solving my problem.

Remember the low-carb craze in the late 90s? The supermarkets had low-carb cereals, ketchup, etc. most of which have virtually disappeared. (Unfortunately for me...I'm carb sensitive) As we've seen with hoodia and other fad ingredients, hhcg supplements would be lining the store shelves and U.S. manufacturers would have every doctor recommending their drug version if more poeple embraced it. And we'd probably have more P2 meal plans, supplements, and such being marketed to people on the diet. It's not an easy diet to do, and most people don't have the discipline to eat such a small amount of limited food choices and give up so much. They want to be able to eat their pizza and lose weight, which isn't going to happen.

What would we need big drug companies and fat doctors for,if we were all healthy?I also think men would understand,if it is explained that everyone swims in this stuff for 40 weeks.its all about the money.
