I've been experiencing hair loss for almost three months and it's not letting up. How long does this last? I've lost probably half my hair.
I stopped the diet around August 10. I had my thyroid checked and it's fine. My family doctor and the OBGYN who gave me the Releana (HCG drops) have both told me this is a side effect of being on a 500 calorie diet which essentially stressed my body.
something to keep in mind, although im not sure if it was stated, is that it is not at ALL uncommon for women particularly to notice thinning hair on body or head, or hair loss during heavy weight loss. from what ive heard it usually comes back after the weight stabilizes.
I haven't been on this site for a while (not since I finished the diet back in October), but I wanted to add my 2 cents about hair loss. I have a lot of hair (so much that several hair dressers over the years commented on it) and have never had hair loss (not after my kids were born nor even when my thyroid stopped working). But a month after I finished the diet my hair started falling out by the handfuls! It's been almost 3 months and it has finally slowed (but not stopped), despite taking a hair supplement my hcg doctor suggested. My once thick, long blond hair is now quite thin (I had it cut above shoulder length because the ends got so stringy looking). And I only lost 20 lbs over the 40 day course, so I really didn't consider the weight loss much of a shock to my body. I had hoped to do another round in the spring to lose another 15 lbs, but this side effect changes everything. I even recommended the diet to a good friend who got her hcg online and did a short round with good results. But now her thick, course dark hair is falling out! I feel badly that I was the one who recommended the diet. Beware this side effect--there seems to be no way to predict if you will experience it!
Hi All! I missed most of this thread until now because I had no computer access. My fine hair thinned dramatically after my last round in Oct and I've been going bald on the top of my head. It has started thickening up over the past few weeks, though. I had thought it was happening because I'd been very stressed towards the end of last year. I'm a bit concerned as I've just started my 3rd round today! I really don't want to go bald! I'll look up some of the products you've recommended. Thanks! Oz
I will be starting my program at the end of next week. I am now thinking twice about even doing it. I am scared after reading all these terrible stories about hair loss. I already have very thin fine hair. I do take thyroid medications. I am 50 so thinning hair is already scary enough. From the previous comments it sounds like serious hair loss is very common.
Here's an exerpt from the Mayo Clinic website that probably explains what's up with this hairloss: "Telogen effluvium. This type of hair loss is usually due to a change in your normal hair cycle. It may occur when some type of shock to your system — emotional or physical — causes hair roots to be pushed prematurely into the resting state. The affected growing hairs from these hair roots fall out. In a month or two, the hair follicles become active again and new hair starts to grow. Telogen effluvium may follow emotional distress, such as a death in the family or a physiological stress, such as a high fever, sudden or excessive weight loss, extreme diets, nutritional deficiencies, surgery, or metabolic disturbances. Hair typically grows back once the condition that caused it corrects itself, but it usually take months." Since I took special supplements, ate a variety of the listed foods and didn't lose that much weight compared to many (20 lbs over more thatn 40 days), I guess it was the 500 calorie shock that did my hair in:(
It would be interesting to see what Nationalities are losing hair. The book I'm reading 'The diet cure' by Julia Ross M.A. on page 233 states that if you're Scandanavian, Irish, Scottish, Welsh or coastal Native American, your body will not break down our Omega 3's into EPA & DHA unless they come from fish oil. We're so low on fats during the phase 2 period, that people must get pretty depleted. She says that 95 percent of us are deficient on omega -3 anyway. You can just buy DHA from fish oil. I think if I was losing my hair I might try it. In fact i'll probably try it anyway, cause I'm Scott and Norwegian.
I'm mostly native american and I didn't have any hair loss in any of my four rounds. I always take fish oil though, except when I'm in P2 so maybe I had good stocks of it built up. :-) Colleen
