Hi. I just learned about P3. I'm one of those people who started this diet with incomplete info. I thought I could just do P2 and be done with it, but have now learned about P3.

So, quick newbie question about P3. I understand that no sugars or starches are allowed, but I see all sorts of starchy or sugary fruits and veggies listed on sample menus like bananas and grapes. So, is the ban only for refined sugars and starches ("white manmade stuff" like bread, ice cream, cake)? Are potatoes permitted?

Is P3 more like a "caveman" sort of diet where you eat fruits, veggies, and meat and no baked goods?
Or, is it stricter -- more like Atkins?

the only natural sugars you are allowed on phase 3 are the ones found in fruit like apples and strawberries. NO bananas or fruits that are very high in sugar because they give people problems. NO ptoatoes or starchy veggies like corn either. I'd say its more like Atkins than "caveman" but if you read the entire manuscript of "Pounds and Inches" you will have more understanding of this phase.

no potatoes, rice, cereals, breads, pasta. no added sugars. Dr. S. says to be "careful" with the sweeter fruits, so most people do not add melons and bananas until late in P3.

No to marashino cherries, canned cranberry sauce. Caution to bananas, grapes and melons. Beets, chicory root, corn, cowpeas, mountain yams, cooked pearl onion, cooked parsnips, all forms of potato, rutabaga, sweet potato, tomato puree are not allowed on P3 according to Linda Prinster. All other veggies are allowed, but some are cautionary.

Doesn't say. Just has a No on her grid. Maybe lots of them have added sugar.

She says.. regarding fruit....An apple has 19 carbs, 3 fiber, and 14 sugar grams. Since apples are allowed on all phases and Dr. Simeons only suggests caution with "very sweet". Therefore, if a fruit has 14 or more grams of sugar per serving with less than 3 fibers or more that 20 carbs, the fruie is classified as caution.

    Linda Prinster says regarding Vegetables:
Generally, vegetables, contain about 25 calories and about 5 grams of carb. If a vegetable has less than 10 grams of carbohydrates the vegetable is classified as free to eat in the maintenance phase. If a vegetable has 10-13 grams of fiber without protein and /or fiber, the vegetable is considered a starchy vegetable and is classified as Cautionary for maintenance. If a vegetable has more than 13 fibers without significant protein and/or fiber, the vegetable is considered a starch. Beans and legumes are some of the vegetables that contain more calories and more carbohydrates, but many also include significant protein and fiber. For these reasons, several earn the classification of Caution for the maintenance phase as many people have no problem having limited portions due to the high protein/fiber combination. On the other hand, if these have 3 or (? there is editing glitch here) grams of sugar, you may be best advised to avoid for the first 3 weeks of maintenance or use Extreme Caution is advised. Different brands vary in nutitional content for most items so a qiuck reference on any can or package is advised.
