Jen, truvia has a sugar alcohol in it that works fine for some, but causes some to stall. The only way to know is to try it and see what happens for you.
the regular Stevia left a nasty after taste in my mouth all day and caused bad breath even after brushing 3 times a day so i think i'm gonna stick to the Truvia, i hope it doesnt make me stall.
Truvia, and Stevia are essentially the same thing. just one is made by Truvia and one uses its food name. Truvia might just be processed differently which is why there may be a "cleaner" taste.
Truvia isn't the whole stevia plant either. It's just the sweetest component extracted and combined with erythritol. The brands with more of a licorice aftertaste usually have the whole stevia plant, and not just the Reb A extract. I did okay with Truvia last time, but I might try a few days without this time to see if my losses improve.
Healthfood stores usually carry Stevia, places like Sprouts or Whole Foods. Truvia is available at Walmart. Other supermarkets may carry stevia as well, but a lot of times you might not find it with the sugar. It might be relegated to the supplements aisle because the FDA refuses to recognise it as a sweetener by itself. Truvia managed to get Generally Recognised as Safe designation as a sweetener probably in part because they are made by the Coca-cola company. (At one time, you actually couldn't even import Stevia at all because the FDA was playing politics and protecting the artificial sweetener market from it.)
I was very upset the other day to look at the box of Stevia packets I bought from Trader Joe's (thinking they were just Stevia - they said 100% natural) and find out the first ingredient was rice maltodextrin!!! What the heck?? I had used them all throughout the first and second round and now wonder if I would have lost more!! Very disappointing but it did teach me to read the ingredients of EVERYTHING I buy! I bought some Truvia yesterday and hope that will be okay for me!
