I don't know about Trudeau as I don't have his book. But P&I does reference carbohydrates, although like many things in the manual, the section is highly subject to interpretation and vague. There is no mention of whether the natural sugar in fruit is acceptable vs. added sugar. And, there is no mention of a specific carb count. Fruit seems to make me hungry (MUCH more so than even whole grains in small amounts) so I avoid it. He says if no carbohydrates whatsoever are eaten, fat can be more liberal. But zero carb is next to impossible unless you cut all fruit, nuts, dairy and vegetables and eat nothing except meat. So I'm not sure why people consider P3 to be all about high fat. I may post this on another thread as I'm curious about where that idea came from.

"...he patients are told that they may now eat anything they please, except sugar and starch.

During this period patients must realize that the so-called carbohydrates, that is sugar, rice, bread, potatoes, pastries, etc, are by far the most dangerous. If no carbohydrates whatsoever are eaten, fats can be indulged in somewhat more liberally and even small quantities of alcohol, such as a glass of wine with meals, does no harm, but as soon as fats and starch are combined things are very liable to get out of hand."

Alcohol? That's a sugar! I suspect coming from Italy, he had to allow it somehow. They have wine at lunch and dinner pretty liberally there.

He does mention fruit though. He says to be careful of very sweet fruit. But if you do better with no fruit, nothing wrong with not having it. I suspect he considered wine a fruit since it's from grapes. :-)

Here's the fruit passage: For the following 3 weeks, all foods allowed except starch and sugar in any form (careful with very sweet fruit).

I'm leaving for Nicaragua next Tuesday and we'll be staying in the Campo. There is no way I'll be able to avoid grains and I'm worried. There is no refrigeration and I will not be able to cook for myself. So, I'm a bit worried. When I was in Guatemala we ate a lot of eggs and black beans. I've read that the Nicaraguan diet is simply rice, beans, and tortillas. So, I'll be trying to limit my beans and avoid everything else. I hear they also stick a stinky piece of cheese on top of the rice and beans, so hopefully I'll be able to stomach that and leave the rice and tortillas alone. Following P3 in a developing country will not be easy at all. I was going to bring my Premier Nutrition Drinks, but read in this thread that you can't take liquids. Shoot. I'll be making a trip to the health food store to see if they have any kind of tasty protein powder that mixes with water. We'll have access to bottled water. I already bought a little travel package of liquid stevia in 4 flavors.

Speaking of wine, I'm avoiding it, but I LOVE it!!! I think I'm avoiding all fruit...not on purpose, but out of subconscious fear. I'm getting lots of vegetables, though.
