Most kinds of anti-aging therapy revolve around one of a few central concepts- that aging is caused by stress and production of free-radicals, that your bodies healing and cellular turnover rate slows as you age, or that, as an excretory organ, stress placed on the liver, kidneys, and digestive tract eventually manifests itself in disease.
It’s true that stress can contribute to premature aging, which holds true for both mental and physical stress. As your brain is unable to differentiate between physical or mental pain, many of the same chemicals in your body are produced whether you have a broken arm, or are attending a funeral. These chemicals are termed “free radicals, “and have been implicated in everything from aged skin to cancer and heart disease. Some types of anti-aging therapy seek to correct this by encouraging your body and mind to de-stress, while boosting blood levels of antioxidants, special chemicals that neutralize free radicals before they can cause undue damage in the body. These therapies often combine the techniques of massage, acupuncture, meditation and exercise to produce an effect.
Your aging body does have a slower rate of cell turnover and recovery. What this really means is that, while a younger body produces new cells at a pretty good clip is at the highest level of hormones, your rate of cellular production and hormonal level in your 40’s won’t be anywhere near what it was in your twenties. Some anti-aging therapy seeks to replenish the hormonal level of your youth.
Other forms of anti-aging therapy treat skin or visible signs of aging. This is the effect of what your body is doing internally.
