The HCG diet has proven to be an effective one. For this reason, some women may be interested in utilizing it to lose the weight they’ve gained during pregnancy. There is, however, some debate over whether or not this is a good idea for the woman to be on the hCG diet while breastfeeding . We’ll discuss the some of the issues involved in this debate below.
There are those that believe that breastfeeding is perfectly fine during HCG diet. Some of these individuals contend that because HCG is found in large amounts in the female body right after birth (and during it) and it’s considered perfectly safe to breastfeed during this time, that the HCG injections given on the diet, would pose no threat. HCG is produced normally in the body and is not harmful to a nursing baby.
There are other people who are weary of breastfeeding while on the hCG diet any seemingly “foreign” substance is going in the body. Even though HCG is produced in the body, some complain that because it is being placed there that somehow it isn’t the same as if the body manufactured it naturally.
Many of the people against following the HCG diet while breastfeeding don’t argue against in on the basis on the HCG being injected into the body but because the brand new mom would be eating so few calories. The HCG diet requires that a woman consume only 500 calories a day. This is a very low amount. This is admittedly a difficult amount of calories and will be hard enough for a person to stick to. It becomes tougher when a woman is breastfeeding. She will tend to be much hungrier then normal and her body will need more calories in order to manufacture the milk.
A woman that is breastfeeding will also need to stick to a balanced diet. If she fails to eat properly, this will negatively affect the quality of the milk she produces. The baby may not receive nutritious milk if a woman does not eat enough or enough of the right things.
So, is it ok for a woman to breast feed while on the HCG diet? The definitive answer will need to come from her doctor. However, it looks like it wouldn’t be a good idea, simply because the caloric needs during breastfeeding are just too great and not a conducive to following the HCG diet. It may, however, be an option after she is finished breastfeeding.
