GAINS
There are notorious foods that cause a gain for many people. Sometimes, this is due to an inflammatory response. Food intolerances and full-blown allergies can also be to blame. Last, but not least, it could be a thyroid issue at work; a certain class of food called "goitrogens" inhibit the function of the thyroid, and if you have thyroid issues, these goitrogens can make any thyroid issue worse.
GOITER AND YOU
Ever wonder why some salt is iodized? It's to reduce the incidence of goiter across America. Particularly, in the Midwest. This issue was occurring because access to iodized food was scarce (fish, for example), and when iodine is scarce in any diet, the thyroid doesn't function so well. Iodine is essential in the creation of thyroid hormone; if there isn't enough iodine, the thyroid has to work extra hard, and enlarges...which results in a large, massive "lump" under the chin. That same lump is the thyroid gland itself, made HUGE. So public health officials convinced salt companies to add iodine to their product so folks would get the iodine they needed, to help prevent goiter from occurring.
GOITROGENS
Some research says the thyroid-inhibiting qualities of the class of food referred to as "goitrogens" are diminished with cooking. Other studies dispute this. If you know you have thyroid issues, I personally would avoid goitrogens even when cooked, as much as is possible. There are two foods on this list that retain their goitrogenic properties after any form of processing and cooking, and nobody debates that: soy and millet.
POSSIBLE CULPRITS FOR GAINS
Typical Culprits of an Inflammatory Response:
-Eggs
-Cabbage
-Tomatoes
-Cow By-Products (Anything that has Casein or Lactose, most Cheese, et cetera)
-Nuts and Peanuts
-Gluten
Foods Associated with Allergies:
-Cow By-Products (Anything that has Casein or Lactose, most Cheese, et cetera)
-Shellfish
-Nuts and Peanuts
-Corn
-Strawberries
Lesser-Known Culprits of an Inflammatory Response:
-Coconut Oil (MCT Oil)
-Almond Flour
-Pork, in all forms (bacon included)
Culprits that Contribute to Thyroid Inhibition/Imbalance:

FOODS THAT STIMULATE THE THYROID MOST, AND OFFSET GOITROGENS
It's a reality that some of these foods may be unavoidable at one point, for many of us. Here's how you can offset the damage: you can eat things that stimulate the thyroid to balance out any inhibition by goitrogens.
Two things stimulate the thyroid most: saturated fat (from animals) and avocados (which has a high amount of vegetable fat). So, if you find your addiction to broccoli unavoidable......then eat a nice chunk of pot roast with it. Pot roast, by nature, is pretty fatty...hence the example.
Note: using any kind of fat to offset goitrogenic effects is forbidden in Phase 2; this strategy is only allowable in Phases 1, 3, and 4.

NOT A COMPLETE LIST, BUT A GOOD OVERVIEW
This is by no means an exhaustive (complete) list. But you get the picture. If you gain at any point in the hCG Protocol, and you've eaten any of these foods, any one of them may be to blame.
SUMMARY
You know your body best, whether you realize that or not. Pay attention to how you feel as you consume your meals, and you'll be able to anticipate gains and losses as you proceed with not just the hCG Protocol, but for the rest of your life. Getting to know your body and its triggers is perhaps one of the most undersold benefits of this approach to getting your body back in shape.
