P4 / Day6 Back to the gym

So here we are in P4. Everything has been going so great, I thought I'd get myself back to the gym. I stabilized in p3 and my body seemed happy at 176.0. I can live with that. It's only .4 above my LIW, right?

So on Friday last week, my first day of P4 I went to the gym and did a 20 minute interval training on the elliptical, then went downstairs to the kinesio machines and did some very light weights, just to move my muscles through the range of motion. Saturday and Sunday were just walking the dog days and Monday I took myself to the Water Aerobics class and did about 40 minutes of it. I didn't bother with the foam weights but I just wanted to move continuously. Just sort of breaking myself in and getting back into routine

Yesterday however, was my first day back to boot camp. Plank rows with weights, pushups, lunges, squats, free weights and of course some cardio thrown in for good measure. I always wear a heart rate monitor and it said I burned 517 calories in my 75 minute workout. Today when I stepped on the scale I was up by 1.6 pounds, which landed me directly at 2lbs above LIW .

So I wonder if anyone out there knows about this stuff? How do I know if this is really "fat" or whether I am just holding fluid in my muscles from the inflammation. Inflammation would be my guess and so I don't think I will do a steak day. I worry that utilizing that kind of extreme measure on a body that is in the midst of trying to rebuild muscle wouldn't be helpful. But since I'm not working out today, I think it would be a good day to eat high protein, and higher fat and give the carbs a rest . I'll carb up tomorrow morning because it will be another boot camp morning.

I promised myself that this HCG diet would be a health journey, not a weight journey so including the exercise is a necessity. I can't not workout and build muscle just because I don't want to see the number on the scale go up. I guess measurements will be really key here. I had them all done at the gym last Thursday, and will have them redone in August sometime. That should give me a good idea about healthy progress.

But since remeasuring is at least 5 weeks away, I need to be in some kind of control till then. I'm still almost completely sugar free, no white stuff, flour, potatoes etc. and I'm eating almost entirely whole, clean foods with the exception of my protein powder and my Quest bars......hmmmm Quest bars. They are the one item that might cause a problem for me. They are routinely my before bed snack (well they had been before HCG and I did have one these past 2 nights).....think I might have to cut them out of the diet along with the quinoa (the only other new thing I ate yesterday) for a bit until I see if this stabilization issue is exercise related.

One thing is for sure. I've missed the gym. I've missed that great feeling of being energized after a good workout and of digging into a healthy lunch afterward that I know is fueling my body the way that it should. I don't want to be "skinny fat" with a low number on the scale but no strength and stability in my muscles. At age 58, my 60's are not that far off and muscle loss just from aging at this point is a real concern. Use it or lose it, baby!

Oh and one last thought about exercise and this diet. I was so thrilled at how well I did yesterday. I think Simeon is right on the mark and if I ever do this HCG diet again I will follow it exactly. I know I lost some muscle in those 27 lbs that dropped off during P2, but it wasn't much. Even after 2 months of no specific weight work, I was able to put in a good workout with the rest of the crew yesterday. Sure my weights were down......but so was my body weight and that made the working out all the easier! Yay!

    Very interesting. I tend to agree with your idea about the quest bar.. I think you're on the right track with continuing the exercises. You could have some initial inflammation from the exercises-- but that should stabilize as well. I'm curious how it will work out for you-- as my plans are very similar to your plans-- fortunately for me-- you are my guinea pig-- sorry love!! Keep us informed--PLEASE.

    You don't do steak days until you are OVER the 2 pound window. Not if you are just at the very top. And I'd guess the gain is indeed muscle inflammation from the workout. 75 minutes is a substantial workout, even if you went easier than normal.

    So you did fine.

    There might be an ingredient in the Quest bars that bother you. I can't personally eat them because of the almonds.

    Phew! Your muscles are just leaner, not missing, River. More power to you on your workouts. I admire those of you who make exercise a priority and actually enjoy it.
