How can we find answers when we dont know what the questions are!?!?!?!

Rate this Entry
I am listening to a book on CD called Diet Rehab by Dr Mike Dow (on TLC show--- my strange addiction). Dr Mike focuses on how low seratonin and dopamine affects our eating behaviors, moods and ability to enjoy life. I have read The Diet Cure by DR Julia Ross and Change Your Brain, Change your Body by Dr Amen and both delved into these topics. its about how our brain chemistry affects everything. We have learned a lot about Leptin and resetting of the hypothalamus that HCG encourages. but i think we need to delve a little further to understand the root causes of what may have gotten us here in the first place and to make improvements for long term success.

I started taking a lot of supplements based on the 2 books I already have and noticed some improvements in energy. But its not enough. Dr Mike seemed to cite examples of cause and effect that really resonated with me. He has quizzes on his site and I scored extremely high for both low seratonin and dopamine which really affects mood, memory, concentration and our ability to make appropriate food choices --- this mainly bc we are using food to self medicate --- bring a high or comfort--- like from sugar and carbs.

I sent for the book and hope to make some progress based on his protocol --- seratonin and dopamine boosting foods and behaviors. Being low on either will cause the cravings and hunger we sometimes experience, especially night eating. He doesnt think any one can sustain a wt loss plan unless they have this under control first. Its very interesting.

I think it would be good for me to pay more attention to creating a well rounded food plan rather than to be totally focused on weight loss. I hope I can achieve both! I did read that Paleo was a great first step in achieving a good balance of nutrients.
My concern is --- for me and for my friends here--- that we are so focused on maintaining the loss and doing correction days that we are missing the nutrients we need to create balance and good health.

I also sent for The Mood Cure by Dr Julia Ross. I found her other book The Diet Cure extremely enlightening about the dynamics of cravings and addictions. I am still looking for answers... still have little energy, even after losing almost 50 lbs and even though my thyroid is seemingly funcitoning better, leading to lower dosage of meds. But I am still scattered and have memory issues. Still sad and depressed at times. My endo says Im fine --- looking for a new one. Going for ultrasound and more bloodwork in the next few weeks. I wld like to see the changes since beginning with HCG. I would also like him to test for metal toxicity since I have a lot of cavities with mecury fillings. dont know if that is wrecking havoc too!

I will continue to use this blog to document what I learn and try as a result of my reading.
I am just finishing up week 2 of R2 P3. hoping to do a couple more short rounds after the 8 week break but my hair is still falling out so need to get that under control first. I'll do another scalp treatment tomorrow.

I have struggled with depression and fatigue since the age of 13, I am now 37. I was diagnosed with hypothyroid at age 16 and with meds not much help. I am a RN and started my career working with an alternative med dr and saw ALOT of mercury tox. I believe EVERYONE with mercury fillings is toxic. I saw people who had their fillings removed and we did the IV therapy to the toxins from their body with improvement.
Have you have your vitamin d level checked? If you are hypothyroid alot of autoimmune disease is very common. I have seen 20 plus doctors over 15 years to finally get a diagnosis of sarcoidosis a disease that attacks lungs first and all other organs in body. However since starting an oral chemo I feel
sooooooooooo much better......still fatigue but overall sense of well being. I would love to know what u think of the mood cure book.

Also for me, this diet is more than just about weight loss. I am trying to learn new healthy eating behaviors. I am currently reading, "The leptin diet: How fit is your fat?" by Byron Richards. It is really interesting and discusses hormones and chemical reactions that happen in our brains/bodies when we eat. Lots of great information and food for thought.

Sometimes I think I should just eat healthy food get exercise and forget the rest. Seems there is always some book saying we should do something. In reading your post I thought oh God not another one. At some point I need not be focused on weight loss cures 24/7. Sorry just feeling a little overwhelmed. Tomorrow I will want the info. Sorry to hear you are not feeling as good as you would like. Did you say you are on thyroid meds.I was having low energy and depression till I went on thyroid. Have you thought about seeing a naturalpath? Have you had your other hormones tested? I sure hope you feel better soon.

Sound like interesting books; I'll take a look on Amazon. I just ordered two books:

The pH Miracle: Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...00_i00_details

Eat Fat, Lose Fat: The Healthy Alternative to Trans Fats
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/045...00_i00_details

I also have the following two books in my cart:
    Nutrition and Physical Degeneration http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/091...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/096...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Now, getting back to your questions... are you still taking B12?

Paleo really resonates for me and I am convinced it is the right path for me. I feel so much better without sugar and bad carbs in my body... and I am committed, by the grace of God, to stay on track.

You can, too, Julie, one day at a time.

Hopdog, I am so sorry for your struggle and happy that you are feeling better! Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your insights.
I did have shingles in the past and have Epstein Barr, both were undiagnosed for some time and then glossed over. My vit D checked out ok but I am doubling my dose to 4k twice a day to see if that helps.
I'm just starting to look into the mercury fillings. My mouth is loaded w very old fillings from childhood. I'm concerned my teeth will completely crumble when the old fillings come out, or maybe they'll pop right out...who knows? I am strarting w the toxicity test to see if i can get insurance to cover it...good luck to me!!! Started to look for a dentist that is trained to do this.

The books should be here mid week. I learned so much from The Diet Cure and in fact Diet Rehab rehashes quite a bit of the same except he is really heavy into seratonin & dopamine recommendations...which I intend to incorporate. I hope The Mood Cure will lift the veil a little further.

I'll keep blogging my findings even if just to help me think thru. Take care & be well!

Faithful...thank you for mentioning what you are reading. I do have Mastering Leptin but I guess I am not ready for it yet because all I hear when I read it are Charlie Browns parents "wha, wha whe, wha whaaa" . When I'm ready to receive it, it will make better sense.

Any insights you care to share? I agree that we all need to learn new habits BC the ones we developed in the past aren't working!

Hey P, I agree! I am so tired of searching but I have committed myself to finding all the puzzle pieces this time. I want to finish all this work and keep the wt off. I am eating healthy and exercising but something is still missing...for me. I want to be slim and healthy. I want to feel good so i'll engage more in my life and contribute more fully. And if it's not too much trouble, God, please let me do that with hair on my head!

I am looking for a naturopath. Can't find one that is covered but may jump in anyway. Already have new tests scheduled w my MD. Want him to do a full hormone panel but it will be a fight. I'm on thyroid meds now which were just lowered!
Thanks so much for your suggestions. Please know, I am blogging this for me...to help me puzzle thru the pieces of info, to gain insights from others who may have like experiences and to refer back to later on. If the info helps someone else ...great...but I don't expect anyone to follow what will be a plan tailored to my individual needs. Take care!

Hey my friend, thanks so much for your encouragement. I have the ph miracle...all about taking a green drink and the alkaline effect on the body. The premise is all disease is based on our bodies being too acidic...which today they refer to as inflammation...very enlightening! I have paid so much more attention to this ...adding lemon to everything for the alkaline benefit. I tried a couple of green drinks...bleeck! Let me know if you find one you like, or better yet, a pill!

I do agree that Primal is the way to go long term. My plan is to finish my rounds...do leptin reset then go Primal forevah! I am adopting some of it now though.

    Have a great day!
