Please help - 2 week weight stall / gain on R1

    Hi all,

Please help. I am so upset and demoralised by this situation. I am 35F, never had children etc.

I have 80lbs to lose. I started my first round of HCG on Oct 2 with 200iu dosage. I have been following the plan, albeit with MCT oil to get into ketosis.

First two weeks went brilliantly and I was down 12 lbs. For the last two weeks, it has been a firm stall at 186-188. I am so demoralised. I need this to work!!

I am working with a doctor and they have the following suggestions:
    - Transition off the plan and take a break for 3 weeks to restart
    - My keto sticks have remained deep purple. They think it’s leptin resistance and I need to take some supplements

    Please help…
    1. Is my experience normal?
    2. Could it be dosing, e.g. too high?
    3. Could it indeed by leptin resistance?
    4. Does HCG simply not work for me???

First, it could just be a stall. Stalls of 10 days or more are normal. Stalls of 2 weeks or more can happen when you hit an old established set point.

However, my suspicion is that your dose is too high. That can cause poor losses even if you don't experience strong hunger.

I would try skipping a day, then lowering your dose to 175iu, or even 150iu which is a more normal dose that most people do well on.

Ketosis is not necessary for the HCG protocol to work. In fact, as you are experiencing, ketosis doesn't make the weight loss happen.

I would stop the MCT and see how you do. If you have been trying for ketosis, you are probably not eating your 2 allowed fruits. This is flawed thinking that you can combine two different methods and expect it to work better than either alone. Best to pick one or the other: ketosis without HCG, or HCG without ketosis.

The leptin resistance thing (if it isn't just your provider grasping at a straw) can be dealt with later after you are off the HCG. Leptin issues, as well as other metabolic problems do not stop the HCG from working. It might work a little slower, but it will work.

The great thing about HCG is that it works for nearly everyone. I wouldn't worry about that being the issue.

First, thank you for your prompt response! I sincerely appreciate it.

Noted re: ketosis. Also on the dosage point…it’s so counterintuitive! During the first week of the stall i was feeling great, thinking that my body had finally exited detox. The second week of the stall, i felt complete crap. I did the apple day and while i lost 1lb after that day, it came right back the following day. After that i was starving

On Thursday, I cheated (first time) out of sheer frustration and ‘only’ gained 1lb. I was thrilled. I got back on it to perfection yesterday and was actually just feeling great (maybe the carbs in my system) only to have me put on another 1lb today. I am very dejected right now.

I think for the sake of my emotions, perhaps i should stop and take a break? And when i get back on it in 2-3 weeks, reduce my dosage and ease off MCT. Any thoughts or advice on that plan?

Since you mentioned you had strong hunger, we can fix this and get you back on track.

Do the skip day tomorrow, continuing to follow the protocol diet, and then reduce your dose to 150iu the day after. Your losses should start back up and your hunger should be gone by the end of the skip day. (If it gets worse...make sure you report so we can adjust correctly....but I don't expect this to happen.)

If you want to take a break, you can't just stop and start eating normally again the next day. You have to transition while still on the diet for 72 hours before you can start a break. You eat P3 during the break, and then jump back into P2 for the rest of your maximum of 40 dose days.

Yes, HCG dosing seems counter intuitive, but most of the time hunger and poor losses are caused by a dose that is too high. I don't know why all these doctors and clinics want to start people so high, but it seems to be a pretty common mistake.

I strongly suggest you stop the MCT oil, it's a lot of fat calories. The HCG protocol works by causing your body to use its own fat stores; which won't happen if you consume too much fats of any type. Also, you must count MCT oil calories, just like any other calories, during the VLCD.

    Thanks both for the advice!

I had my skip day yesterday. Today i took 150iu dose. Am following original protocol to the letter (no MCT oil, exactly 500 cal).

After my skip day yesterday, my weight was 1lb down this morning (?!). I am feeling a bit hungry today, though it’s hard to know if it’s thirst or hunger.

How would I know if I should reduce my dose further to say 125iu?

Good report. The one pound loss after the skip day is encouraging that we are on the right track.

You need to stay at the same dose for 4 straight days before we can assess whether another change is needed.

How does your hunger compare to the hunger you were experiencing before you did the skip day?

Try a hot beverage after your meals and see if that helps.

It might just take a little longer to level out. The kind of hunger that indicates dose is wrong is painful, and its like you could eat your arm off, but then if you do eat, it doesn't stop the hunger. That doesn't sound like what you are experiencing.

    Good morning.

Weighed myself and I am down 0.8lb. I know I should be happy and it’s a good sign. It’s just I have been stuck at this weight for two weeks or so, so it’s hard to be super excited about it. Regardless, progress is progress is right? I will take a 150iu shot today.

Hunger wise, yes drinking a hot beverage after helps. I am sticking to the original diet perfectly. I just hope i can get below 185 at some point…

Women can expect to lose about a half pound a day while on HCG. That is averaged over the entire time, and uses the starting weight you are at on the morning of the first day of the very low calorie diet, and ends on the last dose day.

It might help your progress perception to do the calculation on what your losses average out to at this point and see about where you are. A pound drop 2 days in a row is definitely a good sign.

Unfortunately, if you have been stalled because of dose being too high, you will not recover those probably losses completely, but you should recover most of them and still end up losing close to or even better than the average.

Morning, down 0.4lb today. I guess we give it another two days of shots before we determine if dosage needs an adjustment right? (been two shots since skip day)

Out of curiosity, at some point would you recommend an apple day or another skip day to get things moving if I hit another plateau?
