Thread: Splenda and gain. Anyone else?

  1. #1

Question Splenda and gain. Anyone else?

Hey all. Its 3 days into my 8th week of p3. so 4 weeks of p4. Went by quick!
Its HOT in cali. Been under my LIW by a couple of pounds and we went to get shaved ice. I asked to check the sugar free bottle for the ingredients. It had Splenda and maltitol.

Ive been losing more when I up my calories to 2000 calories instead of 1500-1700. Then I just maintain. But today the scale showed I had a 1.3 gain and the only difference was the shaved ice. I didn't eat all of it. Just when I felt content (which was half) and didn't drink the left overs as what people usually do.

Its my first time really having artificial sweeteners since before the diet in mid april.

-----Does anyone else gain with these sweeteners?

I don't have treats at all so I said might as well. Regretting it though

You could have been sensitive to any of the ingredients--artificial flavors/colors even.

However, maltitol can bloat you up as it is a sugar alchohol, and recent studies are showing that Splenda can actually cause weight gain. I'd avoid it in favor of more natural sweeteners like stevia.

If you go back to your regular eating style, the water bloat should drop off in a couple days.

Great report on the effects of keeping your calories up. It is so hard for people to believe that they can gain by not eating enough. But we see it over and over as people navigate through P3.

We've all been so brainwashed to think cutting calories is the key.

Leez, I loooove Splenda and now I'm curious, can you share recent studies you've come across? In P2, I use Stevia for cold drinks, and Splenda only in my black coffee. P3 and P4 I use erythritol (sp?). Thanks for sharing.

I like this article by Dr. Mercola:
    https://articles.mercola.com/sites/a...l-Effects.aspx

He sometimes goes a little over the top, but you can use the article as a jump off to do other searches to confirm or expand on what he has to say here.

    The basic upshot:
However, the study mentioned above, published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, found even further disturbing news besides weight gain. Sucralose (Splenda):

Reduces the amount of good bacteria in your intestines by 50 percent
Increases the pH level in your intestines, and
Affects a glycoprotein in your body that can have crucial health effects, particularly if you’re on certain medications

They also found unmistakable evidence that Sucralose (Splenda) is absorbed by fat, contrary to previous claims.
There is a Duke university study from about 10 years ago ago that corroborates that splenda can cause weight gain, you can find info on that by doing a search for "splenda study". I think one of the findings was that splenda confuses the insulin receptors and can set up the conditions for metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is so pervasive now that some think it is the underlying reason for the alarming increase in obesity rates in our country.

The problems have been known for quite a while. But good marketing has lulled people into thinking Splenda is safe by saying it is real sugar, except that they have removed the calories by altering one of the molecules.

I wish they had a stevia based flavor! I need to find my own and just get the ice. The only sweetener Ive used throughout this whole time is stevia occasionally. I am glad my palette is sensitive to sweets in general now and just going to continue this way

I had a coconut and watermelon combo there. Hated the watermelon. Too artificial and it was what hurt my stomach the most.

It wasn't as enjoyable as I remember it being. So weird! Also! LEEZ! I did not have any sugar urges like how I used to after any artificial sweeteners/regular sugar. I drank water during/after and was dying to just eat an avocado. I cant imagine going back to sugar now. Thank you for the help you've given me! Its been a true blessing after my past history

I'm really happy to see you be so successful. I know how much work it takes to change the way you view and use food. That is awesome to lose those sugar cravings. It's one of the gifts of HCG--a fresh, craving-free start with a clean pallet. You are doing great.

Maltitol is the absolute worst of all sweeteners for me. I always bloat and gain with it even in P4, whereas I can not gain or even lose when I use sugar instead.

Maltitol can be the devil, for sure. It can cause horrible gas and bloating, and explosive diarrhea. There were some hilarious horror stories going around the web a while ago of the experiences people had from eating too many Haribou sugarfree gummy bears.

I once made the mistake of ordering a box of sugar free chocolate covered pecan clusters (turtles) that contained maltitol. My usually flat tummy, blew up to twice its size and ached badly for the rest of the night...

Went out with a friend (the cheesecake factory). I always eat before hand and kind of just sit there and talk to my friends while they eat. They are all used to it now! but I did want to try a piece of cheesecake. Got the low carb option (sweetened with Splenda) because 1. wanted to try and 2. Wanted to see if it was the Splenda giving me issues a couple of days ago. Cut my slice in half and had 3 small spoonfuls. I bloated up like a balloon. Its been three hours since and I am still bloated (like a balloon). Drinking peppermint tea with peeled and sliced up ginger now.

Ive never had reactions like this before to artificial sweeteners but im glad I tested it out just to have peace of mind. I didn't know if it was the maltitol or the Splenda that bloated me up the other day. Now just going to stay away from everything besides stevia!

    Very informative post.
Splenda was my favorite artificial sweetener, but not after reading this.
Recently fell in love with xylitol (after using it in my cocoa crack and cinnamon butter sweet potatoes). I wonder if I can find some portable packets of it.
