I'm planning to get some of the hydrolysate type to start boosting protein in some meals, but currently I just have the regular.

So far so good for me. I'm down an additional .2 this morning. I'm viewing any non-gain days as a win as I get started here, so any loss days--however small--are super exciting. And any loss today after yesterdays big loss seems like a bonus on its own.

I tried having my E meal for lunch yesterday, but I think I like it at breakfast better. (I did a chia pudding for breakfast yesterday). Definitely happy dancing here. ^_^ I an amazed its going so well. I had two more PLAN untested foods yesterday....my whey protein and the tilapia I had for dinner.

I'm a little fuzzy about E meals in the portion area. So for lunch, I had roast chicken breast on 2 pieces of sourdough bread with cooked cranberries (with xylitol) and lettuce. And yes! I used my tsp of mayo. But I'm thinking I could have had 2 slices of avocado instead...mmmmm....avocado with a bit of balsamic is better than mayo.)

I was thinking of adding some cooked veggies, but I was already pretty hungry, and the only thing I had already cooked was some baby cut carrots. Since I wasn't sure, I opted not to have them. Would a small serving of carrots fit into that E meal or not? Or are they not an option because they are not as low glycemic as greens and crucifers? For instance, could I have grated some raw ones onto my sandwich and been ok?

How close to the 45 carbs per E meal do you have to stay before it becomes a crossover? The sourdough comes in at about 40 carbs according the package.

I know this sounds picky....but I figure if I'm clear about the boundaries, then I can play with how much I can personally bend them.

Carrots are fine in an E meal. It's the S meal where they are very limited and only for garnishing. Glad you are doing so well! A crossover really isn't going over your 45 grams of carbs--it's mixing fats and carbs but using allowed foods from each grouping. You were probably over your 45 carbs if the bread alone was 40 because you had cranberries too. I don't think you could have had any avocado with your E meal without it being a crossover. You're only allowed 1 tsp of added fat with an E meal and 2 slices of avocado is way over that.

I read that you are allowed 5 grams of fat with an E meal and you don't have to count any bits of fat in your lean protein. 2 slices of avocado is just under 4 grams fat, I think. Used in place of the tsp of mayo, I would think it would be an even switch?

So, to get this straight, I could have added carrots to the E lunch, but since I was already at my carb limit, its not a good idea, even though it doesn't make it a crossover? Maybe going over the carb limit makes it fuel stacking, though? Which doesn't really matter, I guess since you aren't supposed to do either.

Sorry my question was confused....I deleted the non-sequitur question about low-glycemic veggies, so no one reading would get confused as well.

You did answer my basic question, which was whether you could use carrots at all an S meal. So now I know I can garnish with such things, but not really include them as a serving.

I had a great S lunch today. A creamy chicken chipotle chowder that uses jicama cubes instead of potatos. It was super yummy, because I used some of my homemade chicken bone broth as the base. I used canned coconut milk instead of heavy cream, and ate my bacon on the side along with a couple of seed crackers. (Crispy bacon is MUCH better than soggy bacon....) The only other change I made to the recipe was to add some diced red bell pepper, which added some nice color.

No the one thing you have to get in your head (which is hard) that INGREDIENTS trump numbers. So avocado is an S food. You can't eat an S food in an E meal without it being a crossover. You can add 1 tsp of fat to your meal but all that's ever talked about in the book is actual fats like coconut oil or olive oil or a bit of half and half. I basically didn't explain it very well up above. LOL Avocado isn't a pure fat like mayo and the oils.

Basically with E meals if you go over your 45 carb limits you've crossed into the cheat territory. So you could have had carrots with your sandwich if you'd been under your limit. But they only recommend carrots in an S meal as a tiny bit of garnish like in a salad. So again, it's that whole ingredients trumps numbers thing. You wouldn't want to take the amount of carrots clear up to the 10 carb thing because you're skating too close to a crossover.

Clear as mud? LOL Your lunch sounds great! I'll have to try it if I can ever find any jicama. LOL

Edited to add that the numbers game you are mentioning is mainly used for Frankenfoods. So if you're adding one of those, you look at those 5 grams thing and 10 carb rule. Otherwise, you follow the list of what foods fit where.

Thank you so much! That really clears it up for me. I remember you saying you didn't have to count grams, but that was still tripping me up.

Since I try not to eat frankenfoods, I shouldn't have to be concerned with the numbers too much. My main strays into processed foods are protein powder and my Rise protein bar. I probably should make up my own recipe for those bars anyway, so I could sub xylitol for the coconut palm sugar and make it fit the macros guidelines better.

The recipe for the chowder said you could use daikon radish instead of the jicama. But those are even harder to find than jicama, I would imagine. Probably regular red radishes would work also.

But I loved the jicama. I hope you can find some. All my groceries seem to carry it now.

they are actually big fans of protein powder so you're okay there. Not so sure about the Rise bar because I don't know what that is. But it sounds like you've got it all figured out now!

The Rise bars only have 3-4 ingredients. For instance one is almond, whey protein, honey and vanilla. They don't have any other stuffs in them. (Another one is sunflower seeds, pea protein, coconut palm sugar and cinnamon--my current fave.) I think I should be able to make my own with the individual ingredients. I just have to figure out proportions and whether they should be baked for a while or not. But its so convenient to be able to just pop a wrapped bar in your purse and go. It really helps me if I'm out and hungry, and the only other option is a bad choice.

I am indeed feeling much more confident now.

I guess I'll have to do some better searches than just "rise bar recipes".

I was at a halfprice bookstore today and looked for the cookbook. You were right. They said they get requests for it all the time, but they hardly ever get one in.

I paid $16.95 for each book on Amazon. They are the new books. I didn't think that was bad price.
