Why keto may not be right for you

Maybe you will find this article as interesting as I did. I'm always trying to figure out what is going on in my body.

Some people do well on a ketogenic diet, mainly men but some women also. At least for a time. Grammy has said that long term keto can cause a hormonal crash for women at some point.

Dr. Josh Axe gives 6 clues that it may not be the right plan for you:

One of them relates to those that already have thyroid or adrenal issues. That is why the article struck a chord with me. Since I've been in both those categories, maybe that is why I've always had bad experiences with being in ketosis, and why that diet did not work for me.

I always felt bad when in ketosis*. Surprisingly, I never saw that as a clue that bad things were happening in my body. I think that is because at the time I believed that the diet didn't work because there was something wrong with me. It never occurred to me to blame the diet.

Thanks for posting the link to the article. I've always felt absolutely awful when I'm in ketosis. No matter how long I stay that way, I never adapt to it. My body doesn't like it. And I have thyroid and adrenal issues so that may be why. The worst part is, I suffer but lose no weight when I'm in ketosis. It's like my whole body just shuts down.

Like you, I used to blame me and not the diet, even going back to Atkins in the 1980's. Fortunately, about 20 years ago I figured out that was unhealthy thinking and started realizing that each of us reacts differently to different ways of eating. The key is to figure out what works best for you, not what works best for a friend or family member.

That said, I've been begging my epileptic nephew and his parents for about 17 years to give keto a try. They say it's "too hard" as if daily seizures, suicide attempts, a revolving pharmacy of medications with severe side effects, and brain damage are easier. Unfortunately, I think he's now aged past the point where it might have done any real good. And the first time he asked his doctor about it (a few months ago, finally), she recommended against it, further confirming my disdain for doctors.

Strangely enough, men usually do very well with a ketogenic diet so it would very likely help your nephew. It's really an easy diet to follow and I wish I did well with it but I don't.

Yes, I do think it seems to agree with men more than with women. Of course, not all men or all women, but a noticeable majority.
