Thread: How do you make sure your getting enough calories?

  1. #1

Question How do you make sure your getting enough calories?

Today is my first VLCD and I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to get in all of my calories. I have tracked ...Breakfast (5 small strawberries 15 calories) Lunch (Cod w/ cucumber 127). To have dinner it won't be very many more calories.... With following the protocol exactly, how can I possibly get in 500 calories a day? I only want to eat one portion of fruit a day, and I decided to cut out the grissini/ melba toast. I can't add more protein calories right? I am so confused....

You can adjust calories with larger or smaller fruit and vegetable portions. (For instance a small apple might be 75 calories, a larger one 100. Either is fine as long as it is a single apple.) Eat enough veggies to make up the difference after your fruit and protein. You don't have to stick to portion sizes with your veggies. I use my kitchen scale to figure out ounces for everything, then plug it into a calculator spreadsheet that does the math for me.

Why not enjoy both your fruits? You aren't going to lose any faster if you cut one out.

I think one of the bonuses of following the protocol is that it teaches you how much pleasure there can be from eating simple, fresh foods. And fruit is one of the joys of that. If leaving out the melba is for gluten issues, I've found that you can use a gluten-free cracker with a similar macros as the melba and it works fine with the protocol. In Pounds & Inches, it does mention than a small amount of starch is needed.

Thank you Leez..... I followed your advice, ate my second fruit after my dinner and I got to 400 calories. I am still missing 100 calories (Is that ok)? I realize that fish doesn't have that many calories and I will have to eat extra veggies the day I have fish. I am sure by the end of the week (Thanks to your help) I will be able to sail through the eating portion a lot more smoothly! I am looking forward to seeing what I weigh in the morning! Thanks again!

Its ok to miss the 500 mark occasionally, but you want to get close to it most days. You'll quickly get into a rhythm with what works to get your calorie level close to the 500. Some veggies are higher calorie per ounce. Onions for instance. So if you don't feel like eating a bucket of salad greens one day, you can get the same calories from a thick slice or two of grilled onion.

One of my stock P2 meals is a piece of chicken breast or fish done on the Foreman grill next to a thick slab of Vidalia onion. I make up a spice mix that I like and use it on everything I grill--meat and veggies both.

Today I am going to try to get closer to 500 calories and I LOVE onions! I weighed this morning and since it was after loading I was expecting more than a 2 lb loss. I lost 1.5 lbs so I am happy about that but.... One of the reasons I think that I didn't lose more is because I realized in the middle of the night that I kept slathering Vicks all over my nose! It is Eucalyptus oil and a few other oils. I think that might have made me have a smaller loss. It is a habit every night I am going to try to have to get over..... I usually have vicks at my bedside, in my purse, in the bathroom, a stash at my parents house..... lol (My strange addiction) If I stop using the vicks, will my weight loss catch up? I don't know how that works.....

Also, this morning I was going through my bathroom and was noticing that almost all of the bathroom products I have don't contain any oils (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, deodorant) I bought some baby oil for moisturizing my skin. I am just wondering if there are any hidden ingredients I should be looking out for. I love Dr. Bonner's natural hemp and oil soaps, but I know that is a big no no. But I need some direction referring my other bath and body products! I also noticed that some of my makeup doesn't seem to have oil in it either, but I am still concerned there might be some ingredients that have hidden oils or other ingredients that I shouldn't be using. I have read a lot of HCG diet friendly product lists, but I hate the thought of having to run out and spend $100 dollars to get new products..... What is your take on all of this?

I remember you reported a loss from loading. When you don't have a big load gain, it is very normal to only lose a pound or even less after the first low calorie day. You are not doing anything wrong. The way it seems to work is: big load gain, big first VLCD loss. Little load gain or load loss: much smaller loss after first VLCD.

There is no catching up that needs to happen. Your loss is normal.

As for body lotions, soaps, shampoos---anything you wash off immediately is not going to affect things. So what we have found over the years is that you can safely use hand soaps, shampoos, conditioners and such without having to get special products.

Where you want to make the investment is moisturizers, eyeliners, foundation and body lotions that remain on the skin. I like the Neutrogena oil-free moisturizer. I use it even when not in P2. Also, don't use leave-on hair products that contain oils. Essential oils are not really oils, but essences, so the eucalyptus oil in your vics is in that category. There may be carrier oils though, so it probably depends on the amount in there, and how much of it you actually use in a day.

Baby oil, glycerin, mineral oil, petroleium jelly are all fine to use.

Ok thank you, that is good to know.... I am assuming that my Vicks is safe to use then?

In my Bonners Pure-Castile soap the ingredients are : Water, coconut oil, potassium hydroxide, palm kernel oil, olive oil, eucalyptus oil, hemp oil, jojoba oil, citric acid, tocopherol... All of the oils are organic (which might not matter) But since they are all in the soap that you wash off these would be Ok to use? Or no?

Also, I like to wear make up (a lot) and I always use lipstick. I am not sure of the ingredients in my other lipsticks, but I have some Urban Decay lip pallets that have some oil type ingredients I have never heard of. So I am guessing this would not be safe to use. I have also noticed that some of the foundations that I have contain silicons and I don't know if those are safe either?! This is going to be a huge learning curve for me because I love wearing make up and I wear it every day even if I don't leave the house.

I am definitely going to get some of the oil free moisturizer you mentioned. When I have done the HCG diet in the distant past I totally ignored all of the rules and only acknowledged phase 2 and still lost... But I had many stalls and probably didn't lose as much as I could have. Now being in my mid 40's I do feel that I especially have to be more careful with how I go about this so I do it right this time and keep off what I lose.

One last question for now...... I have read/watched video's of some HCG success stories of people that have gone beyond the 40ish days of phase 2, 50 days and beyond. I understand the concept to just want to lose at much as you can the first time around. Have you known anyone to do this and be successful as well? What is your opinion on the subject?

Yes, the Bonner hand soaps are fine since you wash them right off. It isn't the quality of the oil at issue. Its the exposure time.

Here's the thing...you don't want oils/fat sitting on your skin for long periods of time. So if you were say, mixing meatloaf without wearing gloves for an hour or so, or giving lengthy massage oil rubs, that would be too much fat on your skin and enough could be absorbed to hinder the HCG activity.

But if you want to be super safe, use a glycerine bar soap during P2, or even a standard one like Dial.

Any lipsticks are fine, as they are formed mainly from wax. I don't know about the potted types. Silicon is not oil, so its safe for P2. Choose a foundation that says its oil-free or a mineral-based foundation and you won't have to be concerned about individual ingredients.

My opinion is that the best way to be successful with the HCG protocol is to follow it, and that includes timing, waiting times and such. Here are a couple articles that might help you get the whole picture better.

    https://hcgdietinfo.com/how-long-sho...-the-hcg-diet/

    https://hcgdietinfo.com/hcgdietforum...-rounds-21433/

    https://hcgdietinfo.com/hcgdietforum...-rounds-21551/

While there may be some that seem to be successful at staying on HCG until they get to goal, what is more likely to happen is that you won't be able to stabilize at goal once you get there. I've watched it happen to some on this forum, and no matter what they did, they could not stop the rebound gain afterwards. It is heartbreaking, because these are people with extreme discipline and determination, and it wasn't enough, because it was not about discipline at that point. This is a simplistic description, but I think what happens is that metabolic processes are triggered after long periods of deprivation which are irresistible and force your body to regain the weight. The short, managed rounds and stabilization periods specified on the protocol allows your body to rest, reset and stay at a new lower setpoint.

In 2011-12 I lost most of my extra weight doing a series of 5 properly spaced rounds. Although I have to work at staying at goal, and have done extra rounds since then, I've not ever gone much above 150 since that time. That is a practical example of how a new set point was established that is nearly 100 pounds lower now than it once was. I know of at least one case reported on this forum of someone who did extremely an long round, lost over 100 pounds, and then was back after a time having gained it all back again and more. I can't even imagine having to try to get the motivation together to lose that much all over again. I'm not sure I could. So the question becomes, is it worth the chance that the same would happen to you?

Injected HCG is unlikely to be a way you can diet straight to goal anyway, as immunity will set in and you will stop losing somewhere along the way. Once that happens, HCG will not work for you again for a long time or maybe not ever, and the risk is that you lose this marvelous tool. Homeopathic hcg doesn't cause immunity, so you can stay on it longer without seeing the problems building up, and its usually homeopathic users that are tempted to just diet straight through all the way to their goal weight.

Wow that material really helped me put things into perspective! Thanks so much!

I finally understand the concept behind why a longer round would be too much of a risk and I definitely don't want to take the chance of regaining what I lost! Reading the posts that you provided instantly changed my way of thinking on what I originally thought I was going to do.

Congrats to you and your weight loss and being dedicated to do all of the rounds you had to do and doing it the right way! It is something that you need a profound determination to do and mind frame really needs to be in the right place to have such great success. I am getting closer to that mind set now and realizing that if I want to make a permanent change I better follow through with however many rounds it takes me.

Phase 3 and maintaining the weight loss is something that will be semi new to me and I will take it for what it is when I get there. I have always had an "all or nothing" kind of mind frame and that is why I was thinking about doing an extended round till I hit my goal weight. But having said that, doing it right no matter how many rounds and doing what it takes to make my goal and maintain is a lot more commitment and determination and I guess “all or nothing” stand even stronger.
This morning I found that I have lost 2.5 lbs. as of yesterday and 4.2 total lbs. lost so far….. Feeling pretty good about that! I am so grateful that I have this site to give me another kind of support that I have never really had before! Thank you again!

The real commitment is to trust the protocol. If you can do that, you will naturally do things correctly and see long term results.

Great that you are planning for P3. I think its just as important to do P3 right as it is P2. Any diet can cause weight loss, but what is different about HCG is that you get the opportunity for a metabolic change that lets you keep your weight loss, and P3 is critical to that.
